Did Taylor Swift Really Adopt This Kitten?
Yesterday I saw the photos Taylor Swift posted to her Twitter of her new kitten. The kitten is adorable. What I did not notice at first glance yesterday is that the kitten is a Scottish Fold. Very rare. So rare that there are usually waiting lists just to buy this kind of kitten and they are very expensive. Taylor says she adopted this kitten, but did she really? I believe in 100% adoption. I know from past experience that you are not likely to find a kitten as rare as this one at an adoption place. There is just no way. I believe it is possible someone gave it to Taylor, and she adopted it that way, but I think she is trying to make herself look good by saying she adopted this kitten. I would love to know what agency had a Scottish Fold available for adoption.

TS never said where the kitten came from. She could have adopted her from a rescue group that specializes in placing Scottish Folds with people who won't breed them.
There are rescue organizations for purebred dogs and cats, but it's probably unlikely for a very young kitten.
celebrities love to have rare breeds. Makes them feel special. Just ask Mike Tyson and his pet tiger in Las Vegas.
I bet what happend is a breeder gave it to her as a gift. So if it is a gift in her head it is an "adoption". Becuase that is celebrity logic.

She also could have gotten it from people who didn't want the kitten. That's how we got our Manx kitten. The people who owned her didn't want her and treated her badly so we adopted her from them.

People who want a purebreed and nothing else often don't realize there are rescue groups that specialize in specific breeds. However, they almost never have kittens/puppies.
I'm guessing someone gave her the kitten. Or she fibbed.
She bought it- simple as that.
It's just like Maine Coon kitties. I have one and actually DID adopt it- but he is only 1/2 or 3/4-not pure breed. And I've heard that pure breed anything- as in 100% 'pure'- really cant be found in normal adoption places, because breeders try to regulate those. So if this is a 100% pure kitty than odds are it's not from an adoption agency. Maybe I'd be more likely to believe if it was bigger/older (like my MaineCoon was) but a rare KITTEN?! Yeah right.

she has wee teeny legs and was the delight of many a production office peep this weekend. she had full reign of the work tables and sat atop just about everyone's laptop...kitty likes it warm, despite the temperate climate at houston's minute maid/astro ballpark.
oh, and she also travels in tory burch, in case we also want to speculate about her travel style.
there are breeders and then there are puppy and kitten mills. When Humane Societies get these mill animals they have to adopt them out when they are deemed fit enough.
The word "adoption" might have been used loosely too, maybe TS thought buying a kitten from a breeder was the same as adopting.
I think she probably isn't aware of the meaning of "adoption" in this context, and just means that she made the kitten part of her family. I don't think she intended to lie about having bought it.

Jasmine I also adopted an older Maine Coon, BIGGEST kitty I've ever seen! I'm sure he's not pure. I have had 2 Manxes - one I rescued off the streets, the other from Craigs List who had to give her up. All the rest of my kitties have been found very young as feral or adopted.
I personally have nothing against purebred animals, I've had 2 GSDs myself, and would never get another breed anymore.
Highly doubt a Scottish Gold young kitty is adopted.
As most of you know I HIGHLY recommend pet rescue (plus I work as a consultant for the ASPCA so it's a given I guess).
That being said, my past chief of staff actually did "rescue" a Scottish Fold. However, it still came from a breeder that could not sell it b/c it had a congenital condition (shocking with any purebred, Ha!) so he was able to treat the cat and they were able to find it a home...
That being said, I don't think she rescued this kitty. I agree that she confused about the term "adoption." It would of been nice for her to adopt one of the millions of kitties euthanized every year in shelters....
We have a purebred rescue in the Midwest for cats. It is a great organization. I adopted a Maine Coon, Toulouse, when he was about 8. He died last year unexpectedly (and heartbreakingly - converse to the poster yesterday who said it is 'just a cat').
This year we adopted another Maine Coon, Gaia. We don't know her backstory either but guess she is about 5-6. She was starving when found with a broken tail, broken tooth and terrible ear mites. She is sleeping beside me right now and doing great now.
There are purebred cats on the site all the time found from various shelters. I was originally looking for a Siamese when I saw our dear Toulouse's beautiful face. He was only with our family for 3 years but they were wonderful and my husband called him my familiar. I'm tearing up just thinking about him.

@Alicia- my cat is definitely one of a kind. He can be sweet and cling onto me when he wants to but boy if he doesnt like something- he lets you know!
Its a little disconcerting at times- because they are SO smart, Leo will remember shit- i swear.
One time, he was so pissed off at my mom for locking him in my room (this was like 5 yrs ago) that when he got out he went to her room where she had separated her clothes into piles to do laundry, and deliberately peed on each pile. *shiver :>
He knows words too- like a dog! When I say 'water' he goes into the bathtub. He likes to drink from the faucet in there. I read that Maine Coons often are unorthodox when it comes to water- they love it, unlike most cats- because genetically the trait has been passed down as they came to the Americas via ship and spent the majority of their lives near water.
Whoa- the crazy cat lady came out- sorry. haha, I can go off on a tangent about how fascinating Maine Coons are for hours.
Okay! One more fact. They have tufts of fur between their toes because-get this- they are equipped to climb up snowy embankments!!
I have a Maine Coon too -- rescued her from a shelter. She's probably not purebred but I did get her when she was just a kitten. Her name is Ireland and I adore her! She is the smartest cat ever. And so vocal! She also loves my kids ... especially the baby, which is funny because she's too young to understand "gentle" yet but Ireland always has to be near her. I think she's protecting her, making sure she's okay. :-)
Love reading all the Maine Coon love... One of my (5!) kitties is a MC (mix, I'm sure). He was brought into the hospital by a good samaritan that found him under a car in the parking lot. At that time "Fred" (as we named him) fit in my lab coat pocket.. And now he is upward of 20 pounds-- he is huge. But the funniest most lovable cat I have ever owner. I heart Fred :)
Ok, that kitten is just ridiculously adorable and I would do anything to scoop her up and give her kisses on the nose. It's also nice to see a celebrity with a cat since all we ever see are dogs.
Ms Cool, I'm sorry about Toulouse. It's been a month since we had to put our kitty down and I still miss her so much. I especially hate coming home because she's not there to greet me. I keep finding little claw sheathes (sp?) and I'm keeping them.
I used to have a part Maine Coon kitty. She was awesome. She had short legs and a stocky body and was just the best. But her and my other cat stopped getting along so we had to give her to my brother. At least I could still see her but something bad happened and she had to be put down. That was six years ago and I still miss her.

So sorry for everyone who has lost a kitty-- they really do take over a very special place in your heart. My parents had to euthanize their 6 year old cat last week b/c he was in kidney failure. Both of my parent still cry a couple of hours a day over the loss. Nothing more heart-wrenching than seeing your dad crying to hard he can't even talk. Kills me :(
I think I will give the Swifster a pass on this. She probably said she "adopted" the cutie patootie because she was unaware that "adopted" typically means "rescued."
My pomeranian came from the county shelter. He is super cute and full of personality. I originally got him because I thought my chiweenie would like the company. She did -- they were instantly BFFs. Tragically, my chiweenie unexpectedly had a stroke two weeks ago and went to doggie heaven. She was only 3.5 years old, and I was/am devastated. But now I am SO glad I got my little pompom. He's the only thing that makes me smile lately.
My two cats also came from a shelter -- no purebreds, but I love them all the same!

Who cares where the kitten came from or if she's just looking to try and make herself look good. That's her insecurity if she feels the need to brag or make something up to brag. If she's taking on the responsibility of a pet and will make sure it's well taken care of...then I think that's awesome. Rare or not, any animal deserves love.

I still mourn the Manx I rescued from the street when I was 12. She lived til 20 and died more than 20 years ago, but I still miss her. It's so hard to lose a beloved pet.

I still cry over Sparky, and I will always, always miss her. She was my kitty soulmate -- part Blue Russian.
My rescue cat, Athena, has a foot fetish. She'll let me pet her with my feet, but she is not a cuddler. At all. She does not enjoy being held in any shape or form. It's taken me months just to get her to let me pet her with my hand. I feel awful when she flinches -- I don't know what happened to her before I got her from the shelter, but I want to punch whoever hurt her like that dead in the cocksucker.
Sorry. I have a thing for cats.

Aw, I was thinking of adopting a Maine Coon to replace my beloved fat gray cat, the one who I recently lost to a bladder infection. I love these stories!
Lioness - I just got my first Maine Coon a year ago, he is a hoot! HUGE personality, very mellow too. But yeah, over 20 lbs, unbelievable. I didn't even know what he was when I left the adoption center, just knew he'd be fun to be around.
We used to have a Maine Coon. He never meowed & thought he was a dog. He was found under a car when he was really young. We now have a Russian Blue that my hubby found at a shelter. She loves to follow me around & yell at me until she gets what she wants. Gotta love cats.
If you write your own lyrics you should certainly know the difference between buying and adoption. I have no idea what happened, but the defence that a writer doesn't know what 'adopted' means is nonsensical.
Enty-- believe it or not, there are a lot of purebred cats, like that Scottish Fold kitty, that can be adopted through various rescue organizations.
One of my favorites is Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue, which serves Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and other areas in the midwest. On occasion, they have had a Scottish Fold cat up for adoption as well as other rare breeds.

When I was in my late teens we adopted a cat who was part Manx (she had the short front legs, higher back legs but with a tail). My sister named her Regina but when she got so big I named her Plumps. I adored that cat, but we lost her early due to kidney failure.
I am soooo much a cat person and own (or they own me!) two rescues, as well as two ferals that I feed twice a day.
I have a purebred pom and chihuahua that were both rescues and had a maine coon. Lot of specialty resues in Nor Cal, and I used to volunteer at Oakland Shelter and we would see quite a few pure breeds.
just curious, where did Swift herself say that she adopted it? I only saw her say she was spending time with her new roomate. I know dozens of blogs have said she adopted it, but did Swift herself ever say this? I think a lot of times people put words in her mouth (and in one case a picture) that aren't hers, and then try to tear her down for them.
Thanks, Anita. It's been a bad couple of weeks. My chiweenie was my precious little princess, and to lose her is heartbreaking.

I'm a cat rescuer and I've seen everything and anything get dumped. Bengals, Siamese, Ocicat, take your pick of exotic breeds. It does happen. But I would think Taylor would promote the rescue in question if there is one.
To all you Maine Coon lovers,they are the most sweetest gentlest cats ever. I got Samantha at a shelter. I can't believe anyone would have left her there. Story was that she was the beloved cat of this woman who lived in Soho. She met a guy who just didn't like cats, when he moved in, she moved out. She actually adopted me. She has SEVEN toes on each of her front paws, six in back. Very companionable cat.

I have 2 dogs and 4 cats gotten from various places. The 2 dogs were rescues, 1 a purebred Canaan.
My two old men black cats were both "rescued" from neighbors. I paid to rescue Sebastian from "Cat Tails Rescue" in Grosse Pointe Michigan.
Now my baby, Gumercinda is special. A family brought her into the Vet where my daughter worked but couldn't afford the operation amputate her leg. My daughter paid and brought her home so we could "Foster" her. I laughed and just said one more won't make much of a difference. We of course love her and she's little hellion. She's so cute 7 little pounds of crazy jumping on the 15-20lb other kitties.
At this point, it matters how she treats the adorable little thing. Too many celebrities get animals as accessories, haul them out for photo ops and leave them at a home cared for by the help 99% percent of the time. God, I hate those people, also the ones who have a dog or cat for a few years then tire of it. My animals are 15, 14, 14,11, 6 and 2 years old. It's a lifetime commitment.

Again, I think this kitten is really adorable, who wouldn't want a Scottish Fold. And, as much as I HATE breeders because of all the unwanted kitties that get euthanized every year in shelters across the world, she is entitled to get the kind of kitty she wants. However, I feel, in a way, that because she is "Taylor Swift" (big deal) that she had to get a "special kitty". She couldn't have gone to a pound and gotten a "mutt"!???!!! I wonder if she paid for it like the rest of us would have had too! Would it even have been available for the likes of us regular folk.
