National Enquirer Blind Item

WHICH A-list Latin couple is  getting backlash from Spanish media for ignoring reporters from their home country while openly courting Hollywood outlets? The Oscar-winning couple has been branded snobs and, worse yet, traitors!

Javier Bardem and what's her name? I don't see it at all but I can't think if another A list Latin couple.

Penelope cruz & Javier Bardem - who totally killed it in Skyfall btw!

Javier was fantastic in skyfall, actually the best performance in the movie by far in my opinion.

Oh dear, blogger username chosen by tool of an ex-boyfriend..fixed now!

Yeah, some Spanish journo wrote an open letter to Javier Bardem asking why he didn't give them more interviews. Don't even know why this is a blind....

Javier is killer in Skyfall. Has an actor ever been Oscar nominated for playing a Bond villain? Javier just might be the first.

I think they are just about the only a list latin couple now that j to tha ho and marc (skeletor) anthony broke up.

OK, it can't be this easy so I'm changing my answer. Charo, that saucy minx, and Kjell Rasten.

I'm Spanish and this is not new at all. They have always ignored Spanish reporters while appearing in programs like David Letterman's.
It doesn't help that they are politically involved with the far left and thta Carlos Bardem (Javier's brother) once said that journalist were like serial killers and drug traffickers.

This is not blind at all.

here's the thing.

while i agree that this is most likely javier/penelope, i do question one thing. the use of the term 'latin'. you see, javier/penelope are both from spain, which makes them hispanic, but not latin (as in, the usual designation for people w/ spanish descent, but who are from north america, central america, south america and the carribbean). of course, the NE isn't exactly a bastion of journalism...which is the 1st reason it makes me stick to the javier & penny guess....the 2nd being 'spanish media', which would accurately describe the media in their home country.

Big whoop. There's only so many hours in the day. And Hollywood outlets are way bigger than Spanish outlets. They should make some effort to bring their attention to Spanish reporters though.

Bardem and Cruz? it's not a secret but it's true

katsm0711 said...

@pookie can u please explain simply, who is Hispanic vs Latino? I used to know but now I've forgotten.

msgirl said...

I always thought of Latinos as from S. America. I'm probably wrong, and I think of Cuba, Porto Rico as Hispanic, and then there's Spanish. I'm probably being extremely ignorant!

But definitely Penny/Javiar. I dunno, they probably should give interviews, but Hollywood is much bigger, and also they don't really do the circuit much do they?

Pookie said...

@katsm...yes...it's the following:

hispanic: simply means those that are 'hispanoparlante'...which means, simply, 'spanish speakers'. there are 22 spanish-speaking countries. they are, in alphabetical order:

Andorra
Argentina
Bolivia
Chile
Colombia
Costa Rica
Cuba
Dominican Republic
Ecuador
El Salvador
Equatorial Guinea
Guatemala
Honduras
Mexico
Nicaragua
Panama
Paraguay
Peru
Puerto Rico (technically a US Territory)
Spain
Uruguay
Venezuela

LATINO/A ('Latin'): meaning 'of Latin America', includes the people of spanish-speaking countries in, of course, Latin America. those countries are:

in North America: Mexico

in Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama

in South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela

in Caribbean Ocean: Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Curacao

^oh shoot...meant to add, that how this translates to javier & penny (who are from Spain) is:

latinos/latin americans are both "Latino" AND "Hispanic", but spaniards are only "Hispanic" b/c they are from spain, which is in europe, not in (pretty obvious, i now) latin america.

that's the basic diff.

katsm0711 said...

That was amazing @pookie thank you!

Pookie said...

^you're welcome.

it's pretty simple, really...totally not as complicated as most make it out to be. in a nutshell:

Hispanics: are everyone from all 22 spanish-speaking countries, from europe, to africa, to all the americas and the caribbean. (sometimes the count is 23 when you add Curacao, who's official language is dutch, but where spanish is primarily spoken given it's proximity to venezuela).

Latinos: are simply Hispanics from Latin American countries.

the designations refer to language of origin or descent. most people make the mistake of thinking it's a race reference, but there is no such thing as a "Hispanic race". that's a whole 'nother conversation. ;)

Good guess with Penelope and Javier, however, they are Europeans...not Latin!

thanks Pookie!

@Pookie, that was a great explanation!

So... I'm not latina then, what am I?? Lol
Not that I care, I never really agreed with being called latina because I don't speak Spanish, but it doesn't bother me either... =)

dont forget chicano/as...

person with a parent or parents from Mexico, but who are US born and raised.

Penelope and Javier are white Europeans, just like the Italians and French.

Sherry said...

I never knew the difference between Hispanic, Latino and Chicano until now. Thanks for the education.:)

What YoMismo said is true. This is not by a long shot a blind in Spain. The press here kind of hates them (I mean of course Penelope & Javier).

Javier is HOT.....that is all.

All about Eve said...

@Lori, is it ok to use that term? I remember using it with a Mexican girl I used to know and she told me that they don't like that term.

Bliss said...

All spanish people are right. Javier & Penélope are pretty far away from being loved by spanish press. They act like jerks 'cause treat them like trash. I think that the word "latino" is failed but BI is totally J&P

Lori said...

@@All about Eve- it depends on the person. I actually prefer it to latina, as i feel that it more represents the inbetweenness that some latino(a)s feel based on their Mexican roots and US upbringing. People who are from Mexico (especially from north) see it as a negative term, sometimes associating it with lower SES... I believe this is somewhat involved in the use of the term to refer to rural Nahuatl speaking farmworkers and their use of the -ch sound when pronouncing Mexicano. It was used to kind of make fun of them and later was used to identify the children of migrant workers. Some more conservative persons may also associate it with political activism and/or lack of interest in assimilation into mainstream culture.

Saying Latin and latino aren't the same thing as Spanish, Italian and French are the romance languages derived from Latin and French has quite a bit of Arab thrown in. And Spanish people in Spain do not use the designation "hispanic". That term is for everyone who was colonized by Spain and speaks their language.

this was reported last week non? a reporter outed Bardem
http://abcnews.go.com/ABC_Univision/Entertainment/open-letter-javier-bardem-tony-dandrades/story?id=17546114

Also Penelope Cruz gave a pretty rich comment some time ago saying that every so and so she did the 'favour' of working in spain to help out with the economic crisis.

"I will produce a couple of films a year in Spain to provide work for hundreds of people."

yeah whatever *roll eyes*

Im spanish and im proud of their achievements etc but I cant stand their holier than thou attitude :P
