I used to respect police, and I know there are good ones unfortunately not in my town, we've had 3 go to prison in the last 2 years for molesting children, including a DARE officer. I live in a crappy town though.
If I were a kid with cancer and all adults did stupid things to make me happy, I would be suspicious.
Most cancers have good treatment and long life expectancy if discovered early. If I was given shamely things by people, I would be worried.
I don't know if American cops are so trigger happy as you say, but American average people are as violent as ignorant and fat, therefore violence is the only thing they have to deal with it (isil won't be defeated with love, kisses or non-exploding candy, neither will be your melting pot consecuences).
