Yea lots of times...more interest in the drinking and the style than the actual races tho!

Thousands of them.

Yes, a couple of times. One time I was visiting my college roommate and we went to Pompano racetrack. I won $50. I didn't know my dad was in Florida at the same time, he also went to the track, and he LOST $50.

Yup!

A country, cowboy horse race. Different ranches get together and cowboys race horses across a field.

In old movies, everyone is dressed nicely - suit & ties for men, nice dresses and hats on women - at the races. (And the stands seemed to be filled, even on weekdays. Didn't people work back then?)

Today, people dress in flip flops, cutoff shorts and sloppy T-shirts for church. Fucking Boomers.

"But it's comfortable" is the downfall of society.

Yes, my husband's family was very involved in Thoroughbred horse racing.

omfg said...

Agreed....especially looking at the races in the UK and Australia, cheap tacky Jerry Springer type people are ruining them.

Yes, at Belmont Park. So much fun, really. I should go more often. I've been to the Breeders' Cup and the Belmont Stakes.

Yes, years ago, and saw a horse drop dead when his heart exploded in the first race. I wouldn't go now, it's a brutal industry.

Yes, a few times. I love horses and love to ride, but a day at the races just isn't for me. I went to the Belmont Stakes once, and it was a lot of standing around for 45 minutes to an hour waiting for a race that was over in about two minutes.

no. it's animal abuse. 23 horses in just a few months died at Santa Anita race track in California. it's a horrible, horrible industry.

I used to go with my best friend in college. It was so much fun, and controlled losing as we liked to call it. The one my me closed. Too bad, those were some fun nights!

Never get steak at the track, it's like getting chinese from the restaurant next to the pet store.

Yup, once in a while. OH, I was at the Meadowlands for the hub's Christmas party !

When you live next to Churchill Downs, you've got to go at least once a year. But locals know you never go on either Oaks or Derby day. You'll never get anywhere near the track.

Now on any of the other 80 racing days, go for it.

A few times. It's no more or less boring than a car race, which is to say, watching people go around and around on a track is all stupid all the time.

My grandmother used to take my sibs and me. My grandfather's office was near the racetrack so if we were going to do something with my grandfather we'd go early and watch the races and, of course, bet. My grandmother was quite a character. My sister and I loved horses and took riding lessons. The race track was icing on the cake.

MANY years ago I worked at a restaurant and a waitress I didn't like came and sat down at the bar after her shift. She said "YOU have to go with me to the track - I had a dream you were with me and we won BIG" so she and her husband,a cab driver, took me and my boyfriend with them to the races the next day. YES they won $10600 on a pick 6. It was surreal. The last race, the last of their 6, they bought us a ticket for the winner they needed. They won, we won. We all got really drunk and had a blast. They put a down payment on a house after the win.

Maybe the cab driver husband had a tip, but 6 races? I dunno.

I didn't go again to the track, but did develop a slight problem with black jack years later...

Indeed and drunk betting paid off.

Yes, we lived down the street from a little track in Tucson Arizona many years ago. It was loads of fun, but I learned pretty quickly I don't have an eye for a winner.

Cool story momo, maybe you 2 can hook a bitch up when the next powerball gets to $400 million. I'll give you $100 million each.

MichiganMama59 said...

Yes, and they were very fun.

Yes, and placed bets. Was hopeful until my friend told me that races are thrown all the time!

The races are thrown! All the time!

zerooptions said...

Yes, several and got to see what went on behind the scenes.
I hate them now.

Yes, also Kentucky Derby. Dog track racing back in the early 80s.

I'm Kentucky born and bred. Ridden my fair share of horses. Always felt like horse racing was synonymous with animal abuse.

I finally ventured to my first Kentucky Derby in 2008. We stood near the rails at the end of the front stretch. We'd bet on Eight Belles to win.

She came in second, and just past the start finish line, she broke both front ankles and went down. I heard the bones snap and having had my own ankles broken, I knew this poor creature was in immediate pain.

Out come the Keystone Kops with the covered wagon, the horse's owners and trainer came running out of the grandstands, medical was on site.

They euthanized Eight Belles right in front of my eyes less than 5 minutes later.

I threw up Mint Juleps for the rest of the day.

I haven't watched or attended another horse race since.
