Look for instance at the ton of blind items that lands on a celebrity who's voiced their contempt of Trump. Within a single week, they get automatically linked to Weinstein or a child molesting ring.

Both Harry and Benedict Cumberbatch attracted a lot of fandom from American women. Harry was the good-looking one compared to his brother, and I'd bet that more than few people here pictured Harry as their ideal Christian Gray when they were reading the novels.
They would have "accepted" Harry to marry a British girl, but the fact that he picked an American woman has resulted in some irrational jealousy (cf. the amount of comments on her appearance and her weight made by people who can't all be size 0 themselves). Her mixed ethnicity makes it even worse.
You can see also that the early blind items were all about Meghan and preserved more or less Harry. The more recent ones have started to be dismissive of him too. The readers "hoped" that he could be saved from the influence of this awful woman, now they regard him as forever unclean because he's stuck with her for so long.

Meg is hoping to drown them with lawsuits, hoping that they will just either:
1. Pay her off with cash
2. Negotiate for free PR spots
3. Negotiate for control over coverage, bypassing the Palace.
4. For them to owe her favours.
It is interesting, the Palace has favours, and means to barter, but Meg does not. If Meg wants to silence a story, right now her only option is to pay them to silence it. Which gets expensive.
I don't know UK law, so I am curious how far along in the lawsuit that she can get, before there are legal or monetary penalties for withdrawing the lawsuit.

And about the lawsuit, if the dad sold and they published the letters, the law is still on her side. The BRF does not fight back like this and are used to getting crapped on by the media, until Markle came along. In kind, they will now go after all they royals, which is why you don't fight back.
But really, if MM would allow it and if I were Harry, I would bundle my family and tell em all to go fock themselves. Time to get out of dodge. After this scandal, Charles needs to streamline money and support from other royals to go to Williams and his heirs, then Georgie and his, etc. When Charlotte and Louis becomes of age, they will be AnnAndrewEdward, so I hope they teach them early the value of work and not relying on public support for their lifestyle.
