I can't stand Gwyneth but I think Allen is more likely...she always gets drunk and causes a scene. On the other hand...Kate Moss was one of the hosts and she was the one who supposedly advised Lily to do that whole blond thing a while back so maybe not.
I was going to go for the Sharon Stone guess but is her ego really rising? I mean it has been huge since day one.

Lily Allen isn't a fading celeb, she's a rising one. Her album and tour did well here and have had fantastic reviews. She's going up, not down. And I don't think she'd be so critical of Met Ball anyway. "for try-hards"? That doesn't sound like Lily. She'd say something like it was for stuck up pretentious pricks.
I think it's Gwyneth. She was not there. There was no coverage of her whatsoever. And the rising ego comment probably has to do with the whole GOOP thing. Plus the daily mirror would cover her since she does live over in England
Gwynnie is in LA shooting Iron Man 2 - she moved there w/ the kids for the duration last month.
