Courting? Countess LuAnn Heads Back To The 16th Century
Does anyone actually use the word courting anymore? I can't say that I have really heard it used except as a joke or in a movie. I can't even recall my grandparents using the term and presumably they would have actually courted. Well, Countess LuAnn actually does use the term. Maybe she thinks she needs to because she is a Countess. "I have a few men who are courting me, so that’s always nice!" I also get the feeling that she seems to think courting is all about guys giving her stuff. That just could be the cynic in me. Maybe she is talking about little love notes or putting the seat down.

My coworker used the word courting to describe going out with his now wife. He also uses the words trousers and calls himself a young buck.

Who the hell is she and why does anyone care what she says? And it makes her sound like she's bragging.
I work with an older (late 50s) woman who uses the term "squiring" when a man takes her out. She is an elegant, highly educated woman from a socially prominent family and doesn't sound pretentious or affected when using dated social terms.
Everything about LuAnn makes me want to vomit.

@genesis So do I. He doesn't. It's kind of funny but kind of nice too. He can get away with it because he's just the kind of guy who would call himself a young buck in an unironic sort of way.
I think it's a cute word and wish more men today would "court" women (and vice versa, equal opportunity!) BUT when the FORMER countess (let's call her what she is) uses it, the word sounds snotty and pretentious. I'm surprised she didn't add, "You can learn more about courting if you buy my book."
I'm pretty sure the Duggars use it in the religious connotation. I used to have a friend whose family was pretty religious, and the eldest daughter said she was being "courted" one day. Of course I laughed cause I thought she was being ironic, but it turns out that it means that if you are being courted, you are being considered for marriage. It's all very serious. I think the Countess is using it cause she's pretentious and has no idea what it really means. Obviously, you can't be courted by several suitors(said ironically) if you are heavily considering marriage with them. I guess, unless you live in Utah. :)
I like the word "courting" and wish people courted than just laying it all out there for the picking on the first date.
I would prefer a gentleman trying to "court me" over a scrub trying to "hit that" or "hook up" with me.
But I don't know this woman or her motives for using the word.
Several beat me to saying that the Duggars use that term. And yes, in their case it does mean that you don't even START courting unless you have a pretty good idea that you'll be getting married.
It also means you don't kiss before marriage.
I imagine that the parents involved also do a LOT of planning, almost like an arranged marriage.
...and btw, when are some of the Duggar girls going to get married?? They're of child bearing age, better hurry up or there won't be time to squeeze out more than 12 or so.
My boss just used that word the other day because her niece, who also works in the office, has been getting visits a lot lately by her lesbian friend, and she asked her if this lesbian friend was "courting her"
I am going to find a way to use this word before the day is out.
P.S. I take it the Count was not successful in courting her when he broke up with his African princess

i like the term. women SHOULD be 'courted.' and she's a grown woman with children. what else would she call it?
I'm sorry but I simply cannot take anyone named "Countess LuAnn" seriously.
Aaaah! Oh no. I TOTALLY use the word "court" in regard to dating. I'm in my 30's and when I talk to my younger girlfriends I am always telling them to let the boys court them. We deserve to be treated as if we're somewhat unattainable. At least I wish I would have done that in my 20's.
I'm dorky, too. I'm fine with that.
