No Olympics For David Beckham

You know what David Beckham wanted the most? He wanted England to host the Olympics and then get to play soccer for England in the Olympics. David has been Mr. Ambassador for the London Olympics ever since the Games were announced. Everyone expected he would make the team, but he didn't. David Beckham was left off the team and apparently he is crushed and the guy who left him off doesn't particularly like David but still, to actually leave him off the team? David released a really nice statement, but you know he was crushed. This is what he has been planning on for the past several years. One last shot at glory for his country in the sport he loves. Wouldn't make a very good movie with this kind of ending.

Darn, he'll just have to roll around in his millions until he feels better.

I will comfort him.

@Vicki, we have to get you into a comedy club in Boston.

Was it personal, or do the coaches feel he may not be the best player to take them to the gold because of his constant injuries. Or, maybe they'd rather give the chance to an amateur.

cheesegrater15 said...

In all seriousness, Shakey, I was thinking the same thing when I heard the news this morning. Did he have to try out or was it up to the coaches?

Awww, that's a shame for ol' Becks. :(

The only way this would be a bad decision is if players of lesser skill were put on the team instead of him. I don't follow soccer nor know of how good his game is in relation to other players. If his skills are not as strong as others, then I can see making this choice. However, if this was for personal reasons I hope it bites the person resonsible in the ass.

There's an age restriction for the soccer tournament at the Olympics. Each team is only allowed 3 players over the age of 23. Beckham is way past his prime and the likelihood of him making the final 18 was pretty slim, especially because he's not player in a top-tier Euro league.

Redheat said...

That is too bad for him, but what Cindy says makes sense. Beckham has not really been a strong player for quite sometime. If you think about it, he made the decision to go celebrity instead of focusing on soccer. He should be recognized for his efforts.

AuntJess said...

Isn't this an age thing?

Terri said...

Can't he be a coach or something? I know it's not the same as playing, but he'd be part of the team.

SueRH said...

Put him on the US team!

matt_b said...

It's been a looooong time since Beckham was competitive at the top level of soccer. He would have no chance of getting into the England team based on current form, so his chances of making a UK team were always pretty much zero. It's up to the coach to pick his best team, and there's no real way that anyone could have thought that Beckham would be a part of that team.

What a tremendous blow to his sense of entitlement this must be.

bahaha @ghost and Vicki!

Oh, and am I the only woman on the face of the earth that DOESN'T find him attractive?

cindy said...

I think he's hot... and then he opens his mouth and that squeaky, girly voice ruins it for me.

califblondy said...

Make him the shirtless waterboy and I'll be happy.

I don't think his voice is weird, but maybe I make allowances in his case.

Someone will get hurt and he will get added...

@Chrissy Buns: yes, yes you are!

i agree on the coach thingy, like on the fifa cup... that way he gets to be part of the team, more people are interested in watching the team play, and we get to see his face more often than if he is playing :) win/win/win!

Amy in MI said...

I completely agree! If he has a gag ball that would be perfect!

Chrissy Buns said...

That is what I thought. I will just have to try harder, I guess ;)

Chrissy Buns said...

But may I just say, that is one bonehead hairdo he is sporting in that picture...

anita_mark said...

He's past his prime, plain and simple. Such is the life of an athlete.

That is a terrible picture of him. Otherwise I think he's hot as hell.

The only thing I really like about soccer is at the end when they take off their shirts. Soccer players have the best bodies.

I do like the way he says 'banana' in that Burger King commercial...

Really, all of you making jokes about him rolling around in his millions and sense of entitlement can't comment on a sport you know nothing about. You don't try out for the national team. You are watched all year playing in your club and tournaments. National team squads don't even get a salary bc it's such a huge honor. It's the biggest honor to represent your country! They do get bonuses based on how far in the competition they go but it's nothing compared to their club salaries. I just watched 4 of the senior players get kicked from my favorite team and it's heartbreaking watching these old (33 year olds same as me) still think they are as good as age 20 and be forced off the field for the younger guys. It's the same as when you have to tell an older parent that they need to give up their drivers license bc they aren't safe on the road anymore. Beckham is proving my theory that MLS is where aging European football players go to die. And I'm hoping at least one of the 4 guys my team got rid of come to MLS so I can see them in person!

I second califblondy-- DB as the official shirtless water boy of the 2012 Olympics. Win/win for all....

Kinda sad though about what katsM0711 said-- if it heart was set on it, he must be pretty bummed.

They should invite him to play some part in the opening or closing ceremonies --maybe help with the lighting of the flame --he is one of the most known athletes from the UK.

Robin the Mad Photographer said...

If he didn't make the team due to just not being up to snuff these days, then I understand; I still think, though, that if there's some non-playing way they could include him in the team, it would be a nice gesture, esp. since he did bust his ass helping London to actually get the games. (And if it was done purely out of spite, then shame on whoever did it!) DB may not be the brightest light on the Christmas tree, and we know he's no saint, but he basically seems like a decent enough fellow and a good dad, so surely he deserved more than just a kick in the pants for going to so much trouble, esp. since it's not as if he'd be making any money off the deal. Come on, at least let him be the shirtless water boy, eh?

(Really, though, the Olympics is a BIG money sink for any country/city hosting it--I lived in Georgia when the Atlanta games happened, so I know of whence I speak. London may well regret having had the Games, when all's said and done; I can tell you for sure that a lot of the price-gougers out there will DEFINITELY regret it, when the tourists stay away for fear of being ripped off, and the local customer base gets pissed off over the jacked-up prices and boycotts the businesses. There were a LOT of businesses in Atlanta, and a few in Athens--where soccer, volleyball, and rhythmic gymnastics were held--that either went under or came very close to it for just those reasons.)

anita_mark said...

@Kats, it is the same with hockey and other sports so we get it. They're just jokes. For the most part, it's age. The younger players are fitter and sometimes better. I would've been more surprised if he had of made the soccer team because of his age and he hasn't been playing with the level he should be.

That said, it's a trade-off. He's a face for a sport that isn't as big in North America as it is everywhere else. When the LA Galaxy play on the road, huge crowds show up.

So his skills dropped but he's promoting the hell out of the sport.

Sue said...

He's already massively high profile as far as the Olympics is concerned, with his role as an Ambassador, and I've no doubt he'll still get a shedload of attention during the Games themselves regardless of whether he's actively involved.

I don't believe there was anything personal in the decision not to choose him. I think it was based on his playing abilities compared to the other choices in that age category, and the desire of the management to pick the best possible squad to hopefully win a medal. It's a shame for him, as there's no questioning his pride in playing for his country, but no one man is bigger than the team, and I'm afraid if he'd been playing all the focus would have been on him. Perhaps that also had something to do with the decision. Although knowing the media over here if the team do badly they'll all decide it's because Beckham wasn't picked. *sigh*

His torso is pretty great for a man his age, but I'm not partial to blonds AT ALL, so I agree with you - not hot, to me.

lilo723 said...

Wait, David Beckham plays soccer? I thought he just modeled in underwear and was married to an alien??? I am confused. ;)

lilo723 said...

He is pretty cute, until he opens his mouth to speak. Then he sounds like a woman and ruins it all for me. Also, not a fan of that pornstache he is sporting in this picture.

Ryan Giggs was chosen ahead of him and rightfully so, he is infinitely more talented (one of the all time greats) and is still playing great despite being 37yrs old. David Beckham simply didn't deserve to be in the team if we are trying to win a medal.

Liz said...

I used to think he was sexy when he was younger, about 10 years ago, but not anymore. Especially after I heard him speak and after watching him in a video about Victoria preparing to host an auction/benefit. I was fully prepared to dislike her due to her and live him, but it was the opposite. He came across as a little demanding and whiny, she was very charismatic and fun. Pictures due a very poor job of showing V. fun spirit.

Salsa Lover said...

@dyldaj Well said. Giggs is the better player. Beckham still has a great foot and still places the ball really well. Frankly, those of us in DC who hate LA Galaxy are kinda happy he didn't make it. Although I'll be sad to not see him remove his shirt.
