Your Turn

A debate at work led me to ask a variation of this question on Twitter last night, but which boy band at their peak was most popular?

@VIPBlonde. That is hilarious. Friend(s) of yours?

And another unqualified candidate: O-Town. Anyone else remember that show?

Runswithscissors said...

Menudo.

They kept replacing members and the success continued.

xLux said...

I remember O Town and LFO

The four tenors

NKOTB! Lol

Astra Worthington said...

BSB! Still love them!

M. Brown said...

In Boston there's only one correct answer to that question and no one's said them yet.

Sugar said...

Haha! O Town! I totally watched their show on MTV and made fun of Ashley Parker Angel and his girlfriend.

Seven of Eleven said...

@M. Brown, cool it now!

SkittleKitty said...

As I recall, Ashley Parker Angel and his girlfriend were both in desperate need of a slap upside the head.

Sugar said...

I even remember her name, Shelly.

It's tearing up my heart that no one else chose N*Sync.

I loved Davey Jones, so much. Even if I was watching it in syndication 10 years later.

Lol @Karen!

Someone has to come up with some analytical data on sales and stuff!

@Lotta BSB FTW!

Without a doubt, Backstreet Boys.

the beatles

Britney - you mean the Backdoor Boys.

Historically the Beatles, but they were never referred to as what we now have termed boy band, so I would say N'Sync.

ladybaus said...

the best ones were The Beatles and Duran Duran

ladybaus said...

and Boyx II Men! End of the Road!

Snapdragon said...

Duran Duran was HUUUUUGE. I'm surprised @derek harvey is the first to mention. Though not sure they qualify as 'boy band' in quite the same way (just as the Beatles aren't).

Unknown said...

No, I wasn't referring to your boyfriend!

msgirl said...

Beatles were the ultimate boy band when they started. Screeching and fainting girls, mob scenes etc. unlike every other boy band, they grew as artists as the matured. I suppose you had to be alive during the 60s to recognize the phenomenon that they were. Plus adults loved them too.

madeinbrzil said...

Quote from 9th grade me on the way to tinseltown to catch I know what you did last summer.

"who doesn't have the backstreet boys's CD? They are the Bomb!"

3deep also had nick Newman!!!
Nkotb!!!

Count Jerkula said...

Jen got it. Beatles were the hottest boy band ever.

If you wanna be specific, then the others mentioned (BSB, NKOTB, etc) aren't even bands, just song and dance acts.

Stephanie23 said...

Nsync

Unknown said...

The Beatles were no boyband. Jesus. Read of their origins, time in Hamburg.... I thought boybands were more formulaic. The Beatles were groundbreaking artists (who admittedly couldn't all play their instruments too well to begin with (.
What next? The Stones? The Stooges? The New york Dolls. *end rant*

Unknown said...

Touche'

Count Jerkula said...

The Beatles were too a boy band. They played schmaltzy music, aimed at lil girls. It wasn't until they started getting high that they made great albums.

Count Jerkula said...

Tell me how "I love you yeah yeah yeah" was ground breaking.

auntliddy said...

C'mon, hands down the beatles.
And count, i think it was just for fun!

Unknown said...

Count: it's she loves you....
They were groundbreaking, as up to that point, there'd been elvis.
Then these weird looking liverpudlians, who wrote their own songs, trailblazed across the world with their own distinctive look and sound. It was please please me, and other early shits that provided them with the foundations on which to build their all-time classics.

Unknown said...

CLASSIC freudian slip. Sh*ts=hits!

Unknown said...

If we're including the beatles, I'm throwing in Iggy and the Stooges, the Ramones, Sex Pistols, black flag and Slayer
:-)

Unknown said...

New Kids on the Block!!

I almost fainted when I saw them in concert

Yoj said...

The name boy band is a misnomer. A boy band is a manufactured singing group (with or without dancing). The Beatles' look was masterminded by their manager, but their music and persona was entirely their own. They were a BAND.

@Count
The filmed concerts give a false impression of The Beatles original fan base. Their music wasn't only bought by young girls.

Yoj said...

The "most popular" would have to have been successful in North America, Europe and Asia. I'd think that was Backstreet Boys. Followed by New Kids on the Block.

**FRIENDLY REMINDER**

the CDANers on PC's don't know which comments you guys are referencing without the proverbial @so-and-so. the PC puts the comments in chronological order and the phone version will put the comment under the appropriate comment no @so-and-so needed.

my common sense tells me that TRILBY is referring to Yoj's 2:35 comment but I am not sure. she could have put that under the first comment. just a reminder. sometimes I wonder if certain comments are meant for me but have no way of knowing.

THAT'S ALL FOLKS...

@Sarah, I thank you for letting me know Eddie was in a boy band. Wow. Just wow.

Nkotb

M. Brown said...

Ok. In Boston we might have two correct answers to that question depending on which neighborhood you 're in.

ktmonster said...

New kids were definitely the predecessor to the boy band phenomenon of the 90's in the true manufactured pop way. And oh Donnie how I loved you!

Unknown said...

Joy Staley - you can also access CDAN via the mobile site with your pc and you won't get all the annoying ads (and follow the string easier). Here is the mobile site CDAN

@texas rose

did you mean to do a clicky link?

Ella Bee said...

I danced with Trevor at a club in Vegas and met Ashley. We thought we were SOOOO cool back then haha! *Liquid Dreams*

Count Jerkula said...

@Bee: No matter how hard ya stomp yer foot about it, they were a boy band, until they started consuming large amounts of drugs.

And saying there was only Elvis is completely shitting on all the early greats who built rock n roll. Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Bill Haley and the Comets, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.

I Wanna Hold Your Hand, groundbreaking. LOLZ!

Yoj said...

@Count Jerkula
There's an article on Jezebel.com about the growing trend of analingus amongst heterosexuals. It made me think of you;)

Count Jerkula said...

I'll stick to the one on Gawker:

SFW GAWKER article

#RealNiggasEatBooty

I'm afraid that if I read the one on Jezebel, them testicularly challenged people will attempt to convince me that unless I have a written consent form, in duplicate, w/ video footage of the signing, and an exit interview recapping the encounter, then sticking my tongue in a broad's fart locker is rape.

Plus I heard there are no hardcore sex gifs (can you believe they called them "rape" gifs in a blatant turn of yellow journalism) in the comment section anymore.

Yoj said...

It's the same article!
"If it's clean, it's cuisine."
Do you comment on Gawker?

Testicularly challenged is a very negative way of putting it, Count. We prefer differently sexed.

To be fair to Jezebel, it's not as though the internet is experiencing a shortage of porn sites. Not everyone likes bestiality with their social commentary.

Okay, Count, serious question now. Is it really as pleasurable for women as it is for men? I'm not gonna go through the potentially awkward process of asking an (already awkward) Englishman to do this for me, if it's not gonna be worth it.

Count Jerkula said...

Ass eating alone, may not be as pleasurable, but when combined w/ vibe on clit or finger bang, it is an accelerator, takes you to new heights, can trigger an O if timed right and can make the ride of the O more fun. Yer adding another erogenous zone to the equation, it aint gonna be bad.

Basically same as I said w/ a dude, when ya see the b-hole pucker as yer stimulating the clit and getting them close to an O, apply pressure w/ tongue.

If ya ever get a 3 way going, have one eat yer butt while the other is licking yer clit. I'd imagine that is as good as a dude getting his ass licked during a BJ, borderline sensory overload.

Re Jezebel: The parent company was dumb enough to put a system into place that allowed users to embed that kind of content, they get no pity. This joint you can link it, and no one is forced to click. If ya open the door to the hen house, don't be surprised if the foxes have a feast.

And to be fair, they used the word "rape" just to sensationalize and make them sound more like victims. They claim to be a site for women, yet they debase the meaning of "rape"? That is pathetic.

Stones

Hegg said...

OTHER than the Beatles, probably NKOTB or Take That.

Sprink said...

I refuse to consider The Beatles, Stones, etc, because they were not Boy Bands (by my definition) and it's ludicrous to include them.

I'm surprised no one seems to have mentioned One Direction. They are The Beatles of Boy Bands.

Jessie said...

I think BSB because they had a larger international audience. N*sync weren't a massive deal in Aus.

Count Jerkula said...

Love Me Do, real game changer in the world of Rock n Roll. Totally not bubble gum pop, boy band stuff aimed a teenage girls.

Yoj said...

@Count Jerkula
Sorry for the late reply, Count. THANK YOU for the advice. With you and @Annie Hall as my gurus, I will finally have great sex, I will.

Unknown said...

Count. They were doing drugs (eff loads of speed) before they released their first single! Lol.

Count Jerkula said...

@Bee: Fine. Psychedelic Drugs. You still haven't made a single point to make them not a boy band.

I Saw Her Standing There, innovative stuff.

I cut and pasted the lyrics, but I felt it was overkill, so I deleted them.
