Patrick Dempsey.
Gary Dourdan/CSI. Seen in Cannes last month at the Heart Fund charity event. Bunch of new projects listed on his IMDB page. Per TV Guide, "essentially fired from CSI".

"Back on track" is referencing his love for racing. He is in France now racing in Le Mans.
Agree with the Gary Dourdan guesses. Dempsey wanted off Grey's - wasn't fired. Short doesn't appear to have his shit together yet. Since his firing from CSI (for drug use), Dourdan is on a show on BET, plus other gigs as mentioned by others.
