Today's Blind Items - The Secret Baby - Old Hollywood

Back in the days of Old Hollywood there were a lot of out of wedlock babies. Had to avoid scandal at all costs. This actress, who actually got her start entertaining men for money became a permanent A list television actress. An icon. After she married her actor husband they spent a lot of time apart making money and trying to make it big separately and together. There was a period about five years before our actress hit it big that she was working on Broadway while her husband was doing other work. Our actress had an affair with a man and became pregnant. She refused to see her husband for almost the entire pregnancy and he had no idea she gave birth to a girl. That girl was taken care of for the rest of her life by our actress. Our actress made personal contact a couple of times, but for the most part just made regular cash contributions to the "parents" of the child. The "parents" were old friends of the actress and she made sure they didn't have to work the rest of their lives. All she wanted was for her daughter to be given the best life possible. The daughter died at a fairly young age and the money stopped. The granddaughter has been trying to establish she is in the family line to make sure her family is also taken care of.

Lucy was my immediate thought.
Except for the television part, it could have been Joan Crawford.

I thought Lucille Ball with the first two sentences. It isn't a secret that she was an escort, or escorted some shady characters.

Before she met Desi, she took a year off due to "illness".
Just curious.

The granddaughter should be trying to establish her own career/independently achieved financial security in order to take care of her family, instead of trying to tie her family's wellbeing to a dead celebrity who wanted to keep her mother a secret.

Lucille ball immediately and yes she was really close to the woman running the modeling agency so I'm guessing the friends of the agent

This is Lucille Ball. In 1943, she was starring in Du Barry Was A Lady on Broadway. In 1948 she started a radio show that would eventually become TV's beloved "I Love Lucy."

The granddaughter is trying to prove Lucy is her biological grandmother since the actual daughter has passed. I don't see how it matters if they weren't provided for in Lucy's will and she never admitted being the mother why would the grandaughter get paid now?

Because the granddaughter is a lazy ass who wants to be rich and famous without working.

She probably wants Lucy's heirs to pay her off to keep quiet. I hope they never do. There's nothing she could say that would diminish the love and admiration from Lucy's fans.

The grandchild should be recognized as part of the family, and just inheritance be given.

Why shouldn't she try to get money that is rightfully hers? Why should someone else have it? And where does it say she isn't already financially secure?

The "someone else's" are the two children that Lucy raised and did acknowledge as hers, and whoever else she specifically named in her will. It seems clear that Lucy meant only to take care of the girl, which she did, and not start a financial pipeline for further descendants of someone she never even officially accepted as her child. Some of that money that the guardians were receiving all along should have been going into a trust for the daughter and Lucy was too smart not to have set that up. That is the end of her obligation.

And this: "The granddaughter has been trying to establish she is in the family line to make sure her family is also taken care of." implies that the granddaughter doesn't feel that there is enough money to take care of the family she went on to start. Which would be noone else's responsibility to fix.

I looked it up and from what I've read (unless I missed something) it actually sounds like the granddaughter is trying to get family tree and DNA info, since she now has children and needs that information for medical reasons. Her son has medical issues and I guess Ball had some rare condition that she wants to make sure her children didn't get. She can't get that info if the family refuses to acknowledge the possibility of her being real. I didn't see literally anything about money, but like I said maybe I missed something.

Who was the baby's father? I kind of lost respect for Lucy. She chose her career over her own child.

Carol, I actually have even more respect for Lucille Ball now. She and Desi Arnez were married but living apart. :ucille Ball had an affair, which was wrong, but she was human. Even though abortion was illegal, she could have got one. Instead, pregnant with the child of a man who wasn't her husband, she had the baby, placed it with good adoptive parents, and provided financially for all three of them for the rets of their lives. Lucy was a stand-up gal.
