Couldn't he just get Scientology to pay him that for one of their shitty propaganda films? Of course, he would be expected to purchase a few of their 'courses' in return...

The last two MI films have made more than four times their production budget and he is almost as involved behind the camera as in front. His films have a reputation for being reliably good value for both the customers and the film companies, with no real flops. For all the hype around the new Bourne film it will not make as much as the last MI, even in the US where people care more about the Scientology. If he stands his ground, I think they will pay him.
I thought that too. Or maybe he demands such a huge paycheck BECAUSE of all the money he spends on Scientology. What a mess of a choice for such a talented guy.
If you were famous, rich,closet gay,drug addicted, or preferably all of these, that works too.
Tom is on his last leg and he needs to retire. He should just go away and be the pope of Scientology. Eww

If Tom is serious about making $100 mil, he should re-think his career and train hard for a Vegas bout with Conor McGregor. That's the ONLY way he is going to see that kind of cash. How long would Tom Cruise last in a mano-a-mano with Conor? What a visual that is!
RDJ get part of the gross every time he plays Tony Stark which came to $50m for Avengers and similar numbers for Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron & Civil War. I guess Tom is trying to keep up.
If Tommy boy wants $100 mil for the next MI, that's probably at least $80 mil going straight to Scientology's coffers. Is this what we want to support when we buy a movie ticket?
I really don't consider an actor's religious/personal preferences when going to see a movie. If I want to see it, I'll go see it.

Paramount is under-performing recently. The only big movies that make $ is Transformers. They might actually reach a deal at the end of the day.

Except Tom's at the drag end of his leading man career and should be settling into older patriarch, paid-less roles.

Can someone explain something to me - why with box office figures do they always quote the domestic figure first or in large print, and then have the worldwide box office as a secondary figure? I see this on box office mojo and in the press ...
There were some rumblings about a year ago about the producers agreeing to pay RDJ $100M or $200M for the next Iron Man. Then RDJ gave word there was no plan for another Iron Man. Recently, there was word there might be another.
I thought Cruise was the executive producer of the MI franchise. They put a rush on the new one since the last one did so well and they wanted to strike while the iron was hot, starting work this summer. I can't see him holding up production since it's his baby. Also, I can't see him antagonizing his money people since he'll make a ton anyway. There was a story at DM but I'm not sure I'm buying it.
Are Tom and Davey setting up their escape plan in case the Feds close in? A nice island belonging to a non extradition country, a big house, fast yacht, assorted goodies. They don't come cheap.
He pays Scientology not vice versa. That's why he needs the money.
But back end points are not a guarantee of $100 million.
This definately sounds like Robert Downey Jr. balking at playing Iron Man past the 2017-2018 deal.
This is just historical. Back in the day Variety was the leading trade publication in Hollywood. At the same time the international market was secondary to the domestic US market. Hence it made sense to list the receipts in that manner.
The "rule of thumb" is that a movie that grosses it production costs in domestic release will ultimately make money. In other words if a film costs $100MM and grosses $100MM domestically it will probably make money. That is not to say the amounts are the same. The $100MM domestic gross is split with the theaters and will only be $50MM to the studio. However when the $50MM is added to international distribution, DVDs, cable/television rights etc the studio should generate more than the $100MM cost. Obviously there are exceptions (I believe the Resident Evil franchise is one that consistently earns more internationally than in the US).
