Hmmm, I just thought he came across with the standard Hugh Grant mannerisms, with oldifying make up. Ben Whishaw was very good, of course. The bit about the man his character is based on was amusing - it just goes to show how bad things were in 1960s Dublin, when Lynch-Josiffe (Scott) was a model.

Isn’t the stereotype that people who are the most snobbish/mean about calling people out for being “social climbers” (or are most elitist/cock-blocking about allowing outsiders to enter their “circles”) were/are the worst social climbers themselves?
In my experience, the worst climbers are upper-middle class people (right on the cusp of being there). They’re the ones who will call me up freaking out over the phone going like, “OMG OMG WHY DIDNT WE GET AN INVITE THIS YEAR?!” to the point of me getting secondhand embarrassment because I didn’t even fucking notice it was that time of year again...
Also, I remember one woman who wouldn’t do an open audition (despite struggling to find an actress for the role) and her excuse was she “didn’t want social-climbers applying” (uhm, that entire film production was a famehoe-ing scheme and she’s one of the worst-ass social-climbers I’ve ever had the misfortune to know).
I don’t like talking about “social climbing” because I worry that people don’t understand the difference between “social-climbing” (a social/status thing) versus “social mobility” (an economic concept, which is a basic human right and the stuff the American Dream is made of).
I just don’t want people to read/hear me bitch like this and misunderstand me (if they can’t distinguish the two concepts) and feel shame for their hustle.
