Molly Ringwald Releases A Jazz Album

Did you know Molly Ringwald was a singer? Me either and I would never have guessed that if she was going to release an album that it would be a jazz album. Of course, Molly also does not want you to forget how she ended up becoming in the first place and does a cover of Don't You Forget About Me from Breakfast Club.

She's good, but her singing voice sounds nothing like her talking voice. This must be why she has such a reduced role on her trainwreck ABC family show.

He dad was or is a jazz musician

Saw her in Tick, Tick, Boom! Off-Bway. So, yes, I knew she was a singer

I had a Molly Ringwald record back in the early 80's. It must have been produced by Disney because I remember Mickey being on the sleeve. She sang patriotic songs. It was one of my favorite albums as a child.

Lol at first I thought the song was called 'Don't Forget Aboute From Breakfast Club.' I was thinking, "How could we Molly?"

I have such a thing for her and this is only making it worse.

Anyone recall her singing on The Facts of Life?

She has a lovely voice. Not sure if I like this arrangement of the song, though. I love cover songs and I think a jazz arrangement of this song is a great idea - just don't like this one.

I saw the Simple Minds back in the 80s at a small theater. I wore a vintage gold jacket. My brother got us front row center tickets and Jim Kerr held my hand and sang to me during this song. That is my 80s moment. It is an awesome memory! Wish I still had that awesome jacket or even a picture of me in it!

Her book of short stories that came out last fall was really fantastic too

I must be the only person who thinks this is awful. I hate the arrangement (it's not a lounge song), and I no longer believe anything I hear hasn't been produced and autotuned to the Nth degree.

Sorry Molly.

Ms Cool said...

Hey Jamie2 - I don't like the arrangement, either. I didn't hear any autotuning, though. Perhaps I don't know what to listen for? I always thought it was fairly obvious (kanye west, britney).

Lucas said...

Nah, she can sing.

I think she sings the theme song for Secret Life of the American Teenager.

I learned about this new endeavour seeing a poster for a concert she's doing in my town. I was a bit surprised.

crila16 said...

She's ok. A little boring, but she can carry a tune and it was pleasant to listen to.

I like her. Can't wait to hear it though I listen to rock. Tom Waits is the closest to jazz I get. Oh well, still a fan.

Gayeld said...

Ew. Ew, ew, ew. Just no. Nothing wrong with Molly's voice, I guess, but that arrangement is all kinds of wrong. Gawd, that hurts my ears in a way that nothing has since Madonna's remake of American Pie.

No, I'm not a huge fan of covers of songs I love (yes, I know The Eagles "Hotel California" is a cover, but it's the only version I know,) but there are some that are suprisingly good (Michael Bolton - Dock of the Bay and Georgia on my Mind. neither's as good as the original, but both are way better than I anticipated.) But most are just wrong.

WRITE YOUR OWN DAMN SONG!

A few years ago, I hadn't even heard of lip syncing. Now I watch Grease, and all I notice is when they are off cue. Any producer can make any actor or singer sound great, especially with autotune.

If you want to see what I'm talking about, watch this. http://bit.ly/10TupNH

It's completely live. You can see Art's tonsils!

I have such a girl crush on her, have since I was a kid in the 80's. She was friends with Ducky..!!!
I saw her in a play in NYC once, she's got a great voice

I saw this yesterday and looked up the album of jazz songs she did with her dad when she was six and it was one of the cutest things I've ever heard.

HOTEL CALIFORNIA WAS A COVER?!

Kloie said...

I can't believe her mess of a TV show is still on the air. Hubby and I used to watch it, and it was an hour of teenagers talking about, "I heard he had sex with her." "Well, I heard she had sex with him." "SEX! OMG!"

ethorne said...

@Kloie- The only time I ever saw that show was on The Soup & they had some wacky wtf moments.

The Dude said...

Not particularly a Jazz fan, but this is a pretty good interpretation. Kudos to her!
Beats the heck out of another P Hilton attempt at singing.

Sherry said...

I keep saying it. Not everyone's singing voice sounds like their speaking voice. No autotune here! She had a lovely voice. I knew she was a singer too. Oh and she speaks fluent French as well.

AKM said...

SKOR, I do! I was JUST about to mention that! Heheheh.

How on earth is "Hotel California" a cover when Frey, Henley, and Felder wrote it?!

Soft Talker said...

@Gayeld - The Eagles Hotel California is most definitely NOT a cover. The song was written by Frey/Henley/Felder - Felder writing the music for the song after joining the band.

But I know what you mean about covers - though some of the most iconic songs out there are re-do's (Hound Dog, Respect, I Will Always Love You, All Along The Watchtower, etc.)

Sherry said...

Gayeld there are loads of singers who do excellent interpretations of others songs. Opera and B'way singers come to mind. However not everyone is published song writer. There is something very special and magic in a finely crafted tune.

EGB said...

MsCool, you just earned your name! What an awesome story! And yes, she has been singing since she was a child. Also was a Mouseketeer on the "New" Mickey Mouse Club in the 70's along with Lisa Welchel. I've always been a fan, but after her AMA on Reddit last she can do no wrong.

Sherry said...

*accomplished * song writer. I was using voice recognition.

EmEyeKay said...

@AKM @SoftTalker: thank you for clearing that up. It blew my mind but I forgot to google it.

I consider myself something of a musical know-it-all, especially when it comes to the NW punk and alt scene, which I've been a part of for years. I was shamed a couple of months ago when The Future Mr. Kay let me know one of my favorite Mudhoney songs (Hate the Police, originally by the Dicks) was a cover, and played the original for me.

Not such a know-it-all, after all!

amused bush said...

@EmEyeKay - I too love that Mudhoney Cover (and the original). It is quite interesting to discover unrealized cover songs. It's like a game ;)

Sweetiebird said...

I think her voice just sounds...average. Nothing special, except it's Molly Ringwald.

EmEyeKay said...

@V: it is! I guess if the internet was around when I was 18 I would have known it was a cover. I didn't buy Mudhoney albums, I just saw them play a lot, so I had no idea.

What I love about this instance is that I like both versions equally. That's not usually the case.

amused bush said...

I'm glad the internet wasn't really around when I was 18-25! Some of the things I did...had fun though! Mudhoney was probably my favorite band to see live in the 90's...saw so many great club shows. Those were the days! Saw them do a show in Bellingham - Nirvana was their "special" opener. I think it was one of the last live shows Nirvana did.

Lucas said...

@EmEyeKay - Team Dresch vs Sleater-Kinney...go!

amused bush said...

@Lucas - I'm personally more of a Sleater-Kinney fan, though Bikini Kill were my girls - forever girl crush on Kathleen Hanna ;)

EmEyeKay said...

@Lucas, Sleater-Kinney! I sing one of their songs when I pass by that exit on my way down to PDX.

@V, LOVED Bikini Kill!

I still have posters for Nirvana shows and it's a mere $3 to get in.

EmEyeKay said...

@Lucas, one for you: Hole vs. Babes in Toyland...

BZZZ wrong answer! The answer is L7! :)

amused bush said...

@EmEyeKay - $3 Nirvana shows were the days! Or free shows at the OK Hotel! L7 was one righteous band.

AKM said...

Sleater-Kinney!

"All the little babies go oh oh, I want to..."

EmEyeKay said...

Oh, you three are making me wish I didn't have to leave, which I do.

Nice to meet you, @V, I don't think I've seen you here before. Let's talk grunge another time!

annanaannnaaaa said...

Awwww... I never realized we had so many cool kids on CDaN. This makes me happy. :)

amused bush said...

@EmEyeKay - thanks! Nice to meet you too! We'll need to continue the grunge convo, miss those days ;)

I think I've read that Molly's dad was a jazz musician--I can remember hearing her say she wanted to sing in an interview.

Henriette said...

Knew she sang and her father was a blind jazz musician.

Speaking of covers, I love Phil Collins cover of "Groovy Kind of Love." I remember in high school listening to it and my uncle said it was a Mindbenders song from the 60s, which was actually them doing a cover of it from Dianne and Annita. Collin's version is my fave. I'm going to go listen to it now.

Lucas said...

@EmEyeKay & V - Really on the SK? Team Dresch was the shit. That break in the middle of "She's Amazing"? STILL kills me. And I much prefer older SK. When I was going though my divorce I could often be found singing "Got this feeling, when I heard your name the other day..." at the top of my lungs. Good, good times.

Hole vs Babes in Toyland? I go Hole, they had tighter songwriting, which I credit to Kurt Cobain and Billy Corgan. And I LOVE L7 "You've made my shiiiiiiittttt liiiiiist". What about Seven Year Bitch? "So you're kickin back in to a once kicked habit..." (Yes, I know it's a Jim Carroll song. Don't care).

Oh man, I could talk grrl bands all night. Lois, anyone? "The trouble with me is that I'm trouble..."

Gabby said...

Her voice is really nothing special but this arrangement is the PITS. I couldn't even listen to the whole thing, and it was just a preview!

Mango said...

16 Candles is my favorite teen movie and I'll love Molly forever but I HATE THIS ARRANGEMENT. It sounds like something Kristen Wiig would sing in an SNL sketch. Sorry, Molly. :(
