What is the most money you have won or lost gambling? Do you gamble?

My dad had a dream that 024 would hit on the daily number and played that number for 2 weeks before giving up. I played it the next day and won 40 bucks! He was not happy. The most I've won on a scratch ticket is 50 bucks. I don't go to casinos except for when they have a seafood buffet.

I don't gamble because you have to be prepared to lose at least a little money, and I never have any I can afford to lose.

I won $250 on a scratch ticket my MIL put in my Christmas stocking one year. :)

I don't gamble, though.

Most I've won on a lottery ticket was $13, at the casino $100. I'm not a bg fan of gambling personally. I just never win so why waste the $?

$2400 on Keno in Lake Tahoe 15 years ago. Had no clue what I was doing. Just favorite numbers and dumb luck.

Since they won't let you count cards I can see no point in gambling. Horse and dog races can be fun to bet on if you are in a group. Baseball games too.

I won $16 in a quarter slot machine in Vegas. Third pull, felt victorious!

I do random scratch lottery---Maybe $100/year. The most I've won on a ticket is $20.

libby said...

I should mention--My BOYFRIEND buys me scratch lottery tickets--hahahaha. I don't spend MY OWN money or anything!
I'm so evil. That's probably why I don't win.

I gamble a bit in Vegas. A little Blackjack, but I could play Pai Gow for hours! Never lost money. Rule #1 of gambling: always play with house money. As soon as you start winning, set aside your "original investment" in a separate pile, and don't dip back into it. Most I've won was $800, but I don't bet big, so I don't win back. Oh, I almost forgot War at the Wynn. I felt just like Cousin Eddie in Vegas Vacation!!!

*dont bet big, so I don't win big

I've been to casinos maybe five times in my entire life. Once I played a Monopoly slot machine and won $300 immediately. So I left.

I am not a gambler. I take very carefully considered risks, but never gamble.

Won $100.00; I'm not a big gambler but I like the atmosphere of casinos.

I barely buy lotto tickets but yet I wish I could win at it.

I keep telling myself you have to be in it to win it.

Gayeld said...

Most I've lost is the $20 in nickels I went in intending to play until it was gone (like spending $20 at the arcade.) But those occasions are few and far between.

I think I won $5 on a scratcher once and $1 or $2 on the Lotto, but that's about it. Generally I don't even remember to buy Lotto tickets.

Won $5615.00 as the bingo grand prize on a cruise. Won $3600.00 in "free gas for a year" promotion in Florida lottery. Won $100 a few times on scratchoffs. Yeah, I know I probably lose more, but if I didn't buy lottery tickets I'd spend it on stuff just as stupid.

$1000 on a SuperBowl block pool last year. My cut was $500, because my friend and I split 2 blocks @ $100 each. Also won $300 on the Giants to make it an $800 day.

2011 football season my net was $1675 between weekly pools, fantasy football and single game bets during the playoffs. I rode the Giants hard and also killed it betting the Over on games.

This year, not so much luck. Net was like -$200, which isn't too bad considering all the buy ins.

First of 2 times going to the racetrack, I won $65 on a $5 bet. I was thrilled! I've won $100 on a scratch-off a few times.

My Mom never gambled, but she felt compelled to buy a scratch-off and won $5,000. She was over-the-moon ecstatic and wanted to buy us kids something. We all said, "No! Do something for you!" =) I'll never forget her waking me up to tell me: her voice was shaking and she could barely squeak it out. 5 grand was a lot of money to us, especially in 1982!

I am not a big gambler. I was just in Vegas for March Madness. Took out $200 cash, put $40 on a few bball games the first day and then played blackjack with $150. I more than doubled that $150, but then lost some one bball the next day. Played blackjack again and won a little more. Then lost/won some more on bball. I left with a little over $200 cash. I won't ever bet anything I'm not comfortable losing, and won't ever play table minimums higher than $20.

I do not enjoy gambling, but I once won $5,500 on a raffle. Kind of a cool story. My friend was part of some rotary group and had to sell raffle tickets - they sold like eight or nine thousand. I bought five for $20. They drew one grand prize ($5K) and ten first place prizes ($500 each).

I won the grand prize and one of the first place prizes with two of my five tickets.

Totally wasted my money on those other three tickets, though.

$624 on an exacta at the track. Pretty much the only place I gamble.

Biggest win: $120 on roulette at the Golden Nugget in Vegas.

It's April and that means it's time to go bet on the ponies at Keeneland, which I'll be doing Saturday. I'll bet maybe $10-$20 all day and spend the rest of my money on some bloody mary's, which are always a good bet. ;)

I won $240,000 at Horseshoe casino in Tunica, MS a few years ago.

My father once paid for our family trip to Vegas by hitting $1500 on nickel slots.
He followed that one up by hitting $600 on another machine a couple of days later.
Needless to say, that cemented my mother's love of a nickel slot.

I've never lost anything big gambling - twenty or thirty bucks with buddies playing poker. I'm not opposed to gambling, but I don't do casinos. I hate casinos. A casino license is a license to steal. People think oh if we bring in the casinos the state will make lots of money. Not! The house ALWAYS wins.

2 bad gambling stories I heard of:

1) Like an Elks Lodge or something has an annual $200/plate dinner. 100 plates, everybody gets a ticket for a $20k winner take all raffle. It is an elimination thing, they draw a number and that one is out, until the last # is left. Open bar. Guy I know and another guy are left in w/ couple other people, they decide to pool the 2 tickets and split if they win. My buddy has the winning ticket, and gives the guy half the cash that night. Come tax time, he gets socked with the bill for the full $20K.

2) In the NY Daily News a few years ago, there was a story about a HUGE NCAA bracket pool. $100/bracket, winner take all and over 1000 people in it. The winner was given over $100k cash, and claimed it on his taxes. Huge investigation, people arrested, giant mess.

Hit a $5,000 jackpot on a slot machine at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS a few years back. Still watching the monster TV I bought with part of that mad money.

When I went to Vegas, I played a quarter in the slot machine by the door at Caesars, and won 3 quarters. I played those, lost them, and that was the extent of my gambling career.

I loved Vegas, saw every show, did Hoover Dam and the Liberace museum. One of my best friends had a condo in Atlantic City. I went at least once a month for the pool, sauna, beach, buffets, and shows. I never played a penny gambling.

@johnscates - Not sure if this is inappropriate to ask or not, but how do the taxes work on that?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE black jack, and poker. (Forget the machines, they are RIGGED.)But mostly black jack. If you know what you're doing it's not really gambling, it's a measured, minimal risk. The trick is knowing when to walk away with gambling. Before you go in, confirm with yourself or your partner what you're willing to lose and be ok with, and also when you'd walk away if you won. Because the way that they get you, is if you win money, the human brain thinks, why don't I just reinvest this money and win even more? Quit when you're ahead. If you get on a losing streak, for me if I lose three times in a row, that's a bad streak. If you're on a winning streak, remember it will end, as all things do. And be prepared to WALK AWAY. Also tables have energy, just as winners and losers do. Stay positive, be happy, pray if you like to, don't go in with a debbie downer attitude. Also, a table's vibe or luck can influence yours, don't sit down at the douchebag jock table, or the drunky table with the obnoxious loud talkers, find your table, your dealer and go with your instincts. But if you start winning alot, or the tables doing really well, they will switch out your dealer. So mentally note a couple of good ones that you vibe with/like. Also, bet small, lose small. And don't EVER put all your money in when you're losing in some attempt to go all in, and show what a big man( or woman you are, but I've only seen men do this) and that money means nothing to you. Because that's just stupid and you'll probably lose it all anyway. Scared money doesn't make any money. Be confident, feel good, don't drink too much, don't be a show off with your money, look good, no, look AMAZING. That will increase your odds, if you feel and look your best. Don't believe me, try it. Don't bother when you're sick, hung over or upset. Good Luck!

I live in Las Vegas, so it's hard not to gamble when your company wants to go to all the casinos.

My husband and I played a dollar slot with winnings from quarter slots
all video poker I should say, and won the progressive which was 4700.00.
Any jackpot under $1200.00 is not taxed.

I've won at scratch offs a few times. Nothing big though. The most I have ever won was $400, but it wasn't at cards or anything. I was basically dared to jump off a bridge. I did it and paid for it when I came down with pneumonia afterwards. But hey when you are 16 $400 is a lot of $$$. I look back on it now and want to kick myself.

I won EUR2,000 on the Euromillions lottery but I do our country Lottery and Euromillions regularly with set numbers so I guess all playing could be considered a loss.

I win quite alot at bingo (which is big here in the UK for grannies but I go with my mum and aunts) I won £500 once. Also I put a quid in a fruit machine in a pub and it paid out the jackpot 4 times in a row and I one £80. Never won more than a tenner on the lottery. My nan got 5 out of 6 numbers once and thought she be getting hundreds of thousands but loads of people won that week and she wnded up with only 800. She was really pissed off.

*won £80

On the very rare occasion that I go to a casino I set aside $20 to gamble with. That way when I lose it it's not a big deal. You spend more than that at the movies these days.

Most I've ever won was $340 on a nickle slot machine. I grabbed that money and ran. I knew if I kept playing I'd end up losing it.

mynerva said...

I've lost at most €60. Betting on horses and blackjack is the only gambling I do. Biggest win was last weekend - the Grand National. I won almost €1,700. I'm still buzzing from it!!

Biggest win was $1,800 on quarter video poker. I hit the royal flush four or five times in one year. I go to Vegas twice a year and to Indian casinos all the time. I've won football pools too.

The most I ever won was $1500 on a football game. Btw, if Eli Manning is reading this, thanks. I did win $1000 two years in a row in office NCAA pools as well.

The most I've won gambling is $350. However, I play cribbage competitively, and won $5k a few years ago. I also won $1100 2 weeks ago, and am hoping to do well at a tournament this weekend.

Is the lotto considered gambling? If so, then yes. But generally I don't gamble, not my thing, although several of my friends have fun with it.

-Spanish lottery: 80 euros (loss).
-Spanish quiniela (soccer gambling): 120 euros (win).
-Poker among friends: 40 euros (loss), 60 euros (win).
-Slot machines: 120 euros (win).

I play too much but tiny amounts of money, I guess.

I won like 50 bucks at the penny slots once. I don't hang out in casinos for long, as they are way too depressing.

I feel like such a dummy, because I was up by $200, but I ended up losing $600.

@amber Anything over $1200 is taxed then you pay taxes again at the end of the year. The best part was telling them I wanted it all in cash and watching look at me like I was a nut case.

I don't gamble.

In Australia there are signs everywhere saying that it's unlikely you will win etc in an effort to fight gambling addiction.

I like to read them aloud and watch people get annoyed. I promise I'm not normally such a bitch, but if I'm in there reading them it's cos hubby is playing the slots (he never wins), I'm bored, and probably a little drunk.

Jamie2 said...

When the lottery is HUGE, I buy exactly one ticket. I know I won't win, but it's worth it for the fun I have the night before figuring out how I'll spend $100m.

jaariel said...

I have many vices but thank God, gambling isn't one of them. Hubby & I married in Vegas & on wedding night we lost $400 in about 15 mins. That cured me of every thought of gambling since. All I could think the rest of the trip was what a nice purse could've bought with that money.

£60 on william hill (won)

Not a gambler, but on a business trip to Vegas, I put $20 in a $5 slot machine and won $300 before dinner. Later that night I used the original $20 on a $20 slot machine and ended up with $1500. I walked away with $1800 by only committing $20.

I won $770 about six years ago playing blackjack in Vegas. I started with $40. I hardly ever have gambled in my adult life so that put me net ahead for life. I remember an interview with Steve Wynn where he said he never had seen a gambler die ahead of the game. I have yet to gamble since then and hope to prove him wrong.

I am not a math genius but I can figure the odds pretty easy. There are winners in Vegas. They own casinos....

di butler said...

$50,000 on blackjack, $22,000 on $5 slots, most lost at any one time-$4,000. I'm pretty lucky. Hubby never wins over $3-400.

OKay said...

Hubby and I hit the local casino once in a while. We have $50 each and when it's gone we leave. One time I walked out with over $200. I usually try to leave with something, but I am NOT a lucky person. I've also won $2, $5 or $10 on lotto tickets from time to time and I get so happy when I do!

$100 on a scratch ticket (we give these as stocking stuffers at Christmas).

$400 on slots in Aruba when I was 18. I don't play slots now.

I play poker, usually sit-and-go tables, when I visit home. usually a $40 buy in. I usually end up in the money. I learned to play poker when I was about 8 or 9 and I enjoy playing all types of card games.

VeeBee said...

I'm a notorious cooler. But once I did win $247 on a quarter slot. I felt triumphant! My partner won $1000 on video poker at Stateline. And her sister won $1000 on the Wheel of Fortune $1 slot also at Stateline. Lucky turds!

$46 once playing Lotto, but my friend's dad won $75k playing Flamingo Fortune and over $200k playing Fantasy Five (both are Florida lottery games). Of course they were very well off with a big house on the water before they even won... *sigh* but they are super nice people.

Lelaina Pierce said...

Maybe $100? I can't really recall but no more than that. I rarely gamble and when I do it's just slots and blackjack.

J-Mo said...

funny i should see this tonight. i just lost hundreds on slots, then won hundreds back and lost it again. i have no brain in casinos and don't even enjoy it so i quit. i cannot win enough to make up for what i've lost.

sylmarillion said...

I don't have a head for cards, and find roulette and slot machines boring, so no gambling for me, really. Hubby has a head for cards but usually only starts winning once I'm out of the room, :P

$300.00 on video poker. I cashed out then and there.

I won $1000 at bingo 6 months ago and a $1200 jackpot 2 months ago. Other than that, little bits here and there that probably evens it out over time.
