Two topics today. The first is the one I was going to do last week which is your greatest garage sale find, or just a garage sale story. In case you don't have a garage sale story, then today, in honor of National Doughnut Day, I would love to know your favorite kind of doughnut. Mine are chocolate. Oh, or Krispy Kreme glazed. Oh, or just a plain one with sugar. I love so many. Oh, and if you are in the mood, Krispy Kreme is giving out free doughnuts today and Dunkin Donuts has free ones too with the purchase of a beverage.

fuck!!!! no krispy kreme or dunkin donuts within a 300 mile radius. my greatest garage sale find was a painting i still have hanging in my living room of a black cat. i got it for only 3 dollars. oh, and i LOVE krispy kreme glazed and powdered blueberry filled, which they don't make any longer. :(
My grandmother made the best doughnuts, and passed the recipe to me. I think they are super fabulous.
I go garage sale-ing too much. Pretty much everything in my house is a garage sale find. Although someone would probably never know just by looking. I like to find neat rusty or old things, and refurbish them by sanding or painting, etc. Although if it is really old, then I will leave it with its natural patina.

The best things I've ever found at garage sales are usually books == out of print, vintage covers, etc. I got a complete set of Trollope novels from a recent Ph.D. graduate, and a huge load of Penguin Classics with the original cover design. I am a nerd.
No garage sale stories, but I will say my fave donut is an apple fritter from a mom and pop bakery or a sour-cream glazed from Tim Horton's. Hate Timmy's, love the doughnuts. No Krispy Kreme in Vancouver :(

We use to gourge on McHappy's Donuts on Sundays -- the one day of the week Dad was in charge of breakfast and letting Mom sleep in. We all OD'd on donuts and can't eat them now. (Weirdly, only in the past few years did Mom learn he fed us two boxes of donuts -- he was gooooood. Even hiding the boxes I'm baffled how she never figured out we were jacked up on sugar all day.)

I had a heart shaped Krispy Kreme on Valentine's Day with thick frosting and raspberry filling and I have dreams about that donut.

Have to go with a Bavarian Cream, although there really aren't any bad donuts. Except cake donuts - too dry.
Too many garage sale stories to mention, but let's just say that as a kid the annual neighborhood garage sale was my greatest source of income. It's not about what you're selling, but about how you merchandise it.
My favorite donut - anything lemon flavored or lemon filled.
I've only been to a couple of garage sales and never got anything worth discussing.

LOVE cake doughnuts with fresh apple cider. Mmmmm. Mmmmm. Mmmmm. Dom's Bakery in Ypsilanti, Michigan makes the best doughnuts, hands down.
At the Ex there are these little delicious doughnuts called Tiny Tim's. I would stand in line for an hour to get a bag of those sweeties.
As far as sweet finds go, I found an Aunt Jemima cookie car, complete with black face and all. I bought it for 2 dollars and gave it to my mom. She flipped her lid because it is worth so much more, historically and monetarily.
I just went to a sale this morning and got my little boy golf clubs for $25. I think they sell new for $150 so it was a deal for us.
My best find was a pair of tennis racket buttons that I bought for $2 and sold on eBay for $60. Weird and unexpected.
I love baking powder donuts, cream horns, and chocolate covered, pudding filled donuts.
I'm from Massachusetts and always frequented Kane's doughnuts. Their doughnuts are like a lb each. They have a fantastic blueberry filled with powdered sugar coating. OMG!!!!

I love garage sales. Here in St. Louis they have them wed and Sat. Wierd, huh? I know.
I got two Adirondack chairs for $5.00 from an antique-dealing couple in my neighbohood. Black, great condidtion. Also an old metal hospital cabinet for two dollars. LOVE. I could go on an on. But I won't. haha.

I am not a huge doughnut fan, but there used to be a shop nearby whose cream filled (vanilla/choc or strawberry butter cream - yum)doughnuts were so stuffed, they cut it in half and put in around 2" of cream! So bad for you but soooo good.
In a related Krispy Kreme theme...I was watching Paula Deen on Food TV the other day and she made the most decadent, artery clogging bread pudding using Krispy Kreme doughnuts, condensed milk, canned mixed fruit topped with butter (whole pound!), powdered sugar and rum topping. Of course I am going to have to make it this weeked!
Blueberry crisp from Stan's in Westwood makes me a very happy girl. Plus Stan is the best. LA readers - go see Stan.

Bought a box of books at an auction for $1. There was a first edition, first printing Grapes of Wrath with a dust jacket inside. Perfect condition.
Calgary Stampede sugared mini donuts!!! Warm, in a paper bag. So delicious.

best find? a early version of the viewmaster from the 40-50's and 20 slides from around that time including the queeen's coronation. $15.

I went to a garage sale and bought a 70's exercise jiggle machine for a dollar and it worked. The kind women would stand on and wrap a belt around their hips and let the jiggle motion melt away the pounds.
I used it for an art piece and then sold it on Craig's list (for more than a dollar.)
Helloooo Voodoo Doughnuts Maple Bacon Bar is the best in the world. I happen to work kiddie corner from the world famous location. My son will only eat donuts that come in the pink box! Its Anthony Bourdains fave too!!!

There's a place in New Jersey called L&M Bakery, a and they have fantastic chocolate rings (donuts). The absolute best Krispy Kreme is glazed, but they don't sell them around here anymore. Thank God. Otherwise I'd be 20 lbs heavier.

Just back from the KK...my son is drooling over the 2 still-hot-from-the-oven glazed and I'm eating my Apple filled...true heaven.
I found a signed photograph of John F. Kennedy, Jr. in a dumpster. It's an original signature. Somebody cleaned out an evicted lawyers office and tossed everything in the dumpster, including checkbooks and his law degrees. I took the check books and shredded them.
I actually have 2 "best garage sale finds" - the first was something that got referred to as "the Mork chair", "the Egg chair", or "that damn thing" over the years.
It was a stereo chair - imagine an egg 5 feet tall, on a pedestal, and wired with stereo speakers (which worked). I got it in 1995, and kept it with me until about 2008, when I finally had to admit I didn't have the space to justify it any more.
It's now in a friend's office in Washington DC.
The other "greatest find" would be Theodore D. Bear. A friend and I were out driving one day and I caught a glimpse of him out of the side of my eye. I screamed "stop the car! stop the car now!!"; by the time best friend came to a screeching halt, I was already standing in front of him, beginning negotiations. Theodore D Bear was a GINORMOUS stuffed bear, about 4 foot tall and 3 feet around at the belly. This was back in the early 90's, and I kept him with me until recently, when I kept a promise I made to my niece about the grandbaby. I told her that I wouldn't bring up any stuffed animals bigger than the baby until she was walking. Well, she's walking and Theodore has a new home in Kansas City.
I like just about any doughnut, but I guess glazed Krispie Kreme is my favorite. Before I moved, my bus route went past a Krispie Kreme place, and one of the night employees would ride our bus. He always brought boxes of hot doughnuts and passed them around - eating STRICTLY forbidden on JTA, but since he also shared with the driver, the dude couldn't say much.
Best garage sale find is not mine, but my daughters, and it was then a gift to me. I lived in Kansas City for some 15 years and I DESPISE the song "Kansas City". It just irks me. Somehow my daughter found a tape for sale that was 20 different versions of that song, by 20 different singers. She wrapped it beautifully and gave it to me for Christmas. I still laugh to think about it.

Best find, well 2 things:
1. Old timey purple train case in mint condition.
2. Old timey traveling trunk. You know the kind that you stand up and it opens, it has a little rack to hang your clothes on and multiple storage places.. I love it. I used to use it as a coffee table, but I had to leave it in Utah when I moved...
mngddess! I love L & M!!! Not only do they make great doughnuts, but their snowflake rolls, cinnamon buns and cakes are great too. They have gotten all of my business since Peter Pan closed several years ago (liked that bakery too - it was a great escape from CCD classes from OLGC across the street!)

I'll give you my Pork BBQ using pork shoulder recipe and Hungarian Goulash recipe for free with the deal! ; ) [Gotta smile after all this crap .. foreclosure .. no job .. bankruptcy and now my totaling the car I had been driving.. elsewise .. dear god I fear to think!]
As for donuts .. one more friggin' reason to be irked by this state I live in! Everyone is into trendy. So Krispy Kreme came and went here like a flash in the pan .. and Dunkin Donuts went away about .. five years go or more? There were rumors of them coming back .. but then the lovely economic crush hit and I think franchisees dried up. : /
Mooshki hit Wuolett's already .. their Grand Ave bakery is closest to me .. but there are two other lovely donut/pastry joints fairly close to me .. albeit not walking distance .. but when one had access to motorized transport!! Mmmmm!! There is a great place called
"Granny Donut" .. in a community called West Saint Paul and Mel-O-Glaze in the Lake Nokomis neighborhood in Minneapolis. Wondeful donuts .. great places .. Mel-O is kinda yuppy - internet cafe and all .. Granny is run by a wonderful gentleman who always gives you free donuts when you order .. he just tosses extras into the bag! Wonderful guy!
Faves: Granny's - Apple Fritter or anything else fresh and warm! Krispy Kreme - Glazed .. of course! Mel-O - love 'em all .. and my absolute .. would crawl on my hands and knees to get to the Dunkin Donut's outside of my family's place in Jupiter FLA .. Toasted Coconut. LOVE THEM!!
Oh!! And during Minnesota State Fair time .. one GREAT reason to love this state I am in .. Tom Thumb Donuts .. outta the oil and coated with cinnamon and sugar .. burning your hand as you hold the little bag they give them to you in! Is it August yet???
I'm not much for garage sales. The fella loves 'em and sometimes drags me along. I love vintage clothes' stores tho.
I can't let myself near donuts 'cuz besides tacos, they are the one thing that I could eat until I'm either sick or dead.
When I was little my Mom knew what time Winchell's put up the hot and fresh ones and the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting was my fave. The locally owned places used to have a killer buttermilk bar too.
This isn't exactly a garage sale find, but it just happened this morning (how's that for timing?). My husband answered an ad on Craigslist for a nearly-new Whirlpool dishwasher for $50 or best offer. When my husband joked his best offer was free, the guy accepted.
My other favorite find was a newer Ethan Allen sofa, which we found at the Goodwill store in Naperville. It had been marked for $50, but my friend flirted with one of the workers and got him to mark it down to $20 for us. The hardest thing was getting it home, strapped to the top of my friend's SUV and getting it up to my third-floor apartment.
My favorite doughnut is a cruller.

I even like the little mini-donuts in the cellophane wrapper you find in convenience stores - I really prefer those with powdered sugar but can't eat them in public or while wearing clothes, so I get the chocolate covered ones.

Mooshki - I am also in the cities and I love me some Wuollet's but I gotta say my fav are puppy dog tails from isle's bakery, for those of you not familiar, think cinnamon bun in the shape of a tail that you dip into a tub of frosting...mmmmmmm
My favourite charity shop find as I don't really do car boot sales is I managed to wangle a massive bag of 7" vinyl singles for £30 and there are so many rare finds in there and lots of fun random ones like Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a Place On Earth".
London doesn't seem that bothered by doughnuts, even with Krispy Kreme now being here. That said, I love apple fritters from Starbucks, the fresher the better, chocolate iced, creme filled Krispy Kremes and Polish yeast doughnuts filled with custard, powidla or advocaat. My only issue, apart from the fat content, is that they're so damn expensive.
My favorites are totally the twisted ones covered in cinnamon sugar. YUM! Or just a plain ol' glaze one. YUM again! Oh, and you want to know my favorite garage sale find? Try this one on for size: my elderly aunt lives in an old people apartment complex (pretty much the step before an assisted living facility). Anyway, they were having a complex-wide yard sale, and I found this lady, who appeared to be about 90, sitting behind the most gigantic box of vinyl records you've ever seen. I've never been able to turn away from perusing 5 cent records (I kid you not, they were all a nickel), so I started sifting. I'm really glad I did, because sandwiched between all of the crappy Dean Martin and Lawrence Welk crap was a SIGNED copy of Thriller. I stared at it for the longest time, just trying to figure out if someone had been playing a joke, and also wondering how this old lady, who would have probably been at least 60 when Thriller came out, would have this in her collection. Then I realized it was only a nickel, so I better buy it just in case. Got home, and after very little googling, discovered I had in my possession an authentic, autographed, first edition Thriller album. True story. Also, even though I was super curious, I never found out how she came to own it, because she died like two weeks later.
I'm really not a fan of anything sugary or fried, but once in an extremely blue moon I'll go for a maple log or maple frosted doughnut.

Check out their menu. Captain Crunch doughnuts, X-rated doughnuts (I can't even type the name), Butterfingering, Fruit Loop doughnuts, Coc-puff doughnuts (Triple chocolate penetration) and, as Miss PDX mentioned, maple bacon doughnuts (I sent Enty a picture the last time we were there).
But my favorite is Old Dirty Bastard doughnut. It has chocolate frosting, oreos and peanut butter. YUM.
They also make vegan doughnuts. No bacon on those, though.
Oops, I meant to say that Miss PDX mentioned Voodoo Doughnuts up above. The girl has great taste.
Wil, I live around Lake Nokomis...Nokomis East to be exact...I don't know of this Mel-o-glaze, but I will try it! I was sad when the Scandinavian Bake Shop went away! :( They had great cakes!
Kathy ....as you listed ingredients, my eyes got bigger in horror at Paula Deen's (sp?) recipes. Now, I'm no health nut, in fact I'm a Southerner who loves her sweet tea and pecan pie, but even I won't make any of her stuff, lol.

My garage sale story is possibly donut related :) The last time I participated in selling stuff at a garage sale, some lady was trying to buy a ton of stuff for just $1 so I talked her into giving me another dollar and it was the grossest dollar bill I ever touched...it seemed like it was covered in sticky donut glaze or something. I am still grossed out by it.
My favorite donut is actually quite boring...I LOVE plain donuts. My grandma used to have them and sometimes she would put powdered sugar on them for me by putting them in a paper bag and shaking it up. The best!

Best garage sale find: A friend purchased a Jose Cuervo Margarita Ball (big plastic jug with a pump) as a replacement for one I had accidently killed in a horrible bottom shelf dishwasher incident. I had tried to buy a new one after the accident but no one seemed to sell them anymore (shocking, I know). The garage sale one was brand new (although dusty) in the box.

For the most part I don't care for donuts (find them to be belly bombs) but I *will* eat Entemann's chocolate donuts (the yellow ones with chocolate frosting). And I like them refrigerated so the icing gets hard.
I've heard people rave about Krispy Kreme and when one opened in a town south of where I live people lined up for hours. I decided never to try one because I might like it and I don't need another food to crave or obsess about; got plenty already, thanks!
I was a die hard NBA fan when I was a kid. Coming from a strict Indian family--my dad wasn't a big fan of the fact that all of the players were male, of course. :-P One day, on the way home from school, we randomly stopped at a garage sale and my dad bought me 500+ basketball cards for $30.... (Some kid was getting rid of his cards.)
My parents are now deceased...but I still have my cards...and my love of the NBA. It was incredibly sweet of my dad to step out of what was his norm to make me happy...:)
There isn't a tremendous market for basketball cards but there are some pretty amazing cards in the batch that may be worth a pretty penny one day, who knows?

When I lived in Toronto, every year we went to the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE or Ex), and we had Tiny Tom doughnuts. Now I have to go to the small-town fair near us to get them. For some reason they're not as good, though.
I used to LOVE the French krullers at Tim Horton's. Then Krispy Kreme came to Canada and suddenly Timmy's decided to put glaze on everything. Blech.
Now I'm very happy with IGA doughnuts. They're made in the store, but oh they are delicious.
We used to go to auctions. I looked around and felt like I was in a group of leeches, so I don't go anymore.
I don't have any really good garage sale stories. :( I did find an old DVF train case for $5 but it was at a thrift store, not a Garage Sale.
