I'm not sure I ever would spend that amount of money on clothes. Books, yes. New computer, yes. CDs, yes. But clothes don't matter to me much. But just to answer the question, maybe $100,000 a year.
Spending $1,000 without any regret? $250k. But it would have to be special. To throw away $1,000 on a pair of shoes I'll never wear again? $2M
I would never. That's just not what I value.
I would spend that on a vacation in a jiffy is I could! Or a home reno project.
A grand is an outrageous amount of money for one piece of clothing or shoes, so I couldn't even say...a fuck load of money a year I suppose.
I'm having trouble coming up with a figure. Probably at least $200,000, and even then I would consider it a big splurge. See also: I have issues/fears surrounding money.
I can't see myself ever doing that. Ever. I just don't care enough about clothes.
I guess for the sake of the question... if I had won the megamillions, then I would buy myself a $1000 piece of clothing.

Bleh, I've done this repeatedly and I made only around 75K at the time. Granted, at the time, I considered them "investments" in my wardrobe.
I got nerdy and used mathematical analysis to compare what percentage of my current budget is spent on clothing to what would allow the budget to be @1000 a month. Looks like $115,000 a year would be the magic number. That one $1000 piece would be the only allowance without going over budget though- a splurge.
Don't think I ever could. It would just feel sinful to drop that kind of cash on one article of clothing. Maybe on a pair of boots; maybe if we made $250,000/year.
Well, I think I might have broken the $100 barrier a couple times over the past two decades for a pair of boots, which I'll splurge on. I've gone to charity balls in Washington, D.C. and never spent $200 for a dress -- so to spend $1,000 on any article of clothing, ain't gonna happen, even if I made half a million a year. High fashion is a racket.
I'm way too cheap with clothing to ever spend that much on it, regardless of how much I'm making. I can't wear a shirt I bought from Walmart for $7.00 without telling everyone where I got it and how much it cost. Especially if someone tells me it's cute.
I've spent almost $500 on one item, and I was making 60K per year at the time. Shouldn't have bought it - didn't LOVE it - rarely wore it - learned my lesson there. Consigned it later and made fifty bucks.
Put me in the 150/200K level, and then, maybe. But I'm more likely to spend extra money on home improvement or a trip or something like that.

What would me more fun than spending $1000 is finding something worth $1000 and getting it on sale for $250! I'm like you, nola; I can't resist telling people that the shirt I have on was off the sale rack for $2 or whatever.
I don't think I ever could buy something that expensive knowing there are others who aren't even eating that night somewhere. Just me. I am frugal as it gets,too.

If I had $1000 to throw around, I would spend it on my house, not clothes. I guess if me and the hubs were bringing in $350K, I would buy a fab Louis Vuitton or Gucci bag worth that. Because, at least bags can be timeless and you can use them over and over again without much wear or tear.

Well, when I used to make 200k a year every month I spent a grand on a pair of shoes/purse. Can't wait for the real estate to bounce back!! Now, I buy on Ebay and it's just as fun.
If I hit a jackpot gambling or somehow came into extra money, I'd finally get the Loubies I've been wanting forever. Maybe.
There have been times when I could have, but I felt too guilty. I'd be afraid I'd get hit by a car after leaving the the store. I just know somehow someway I'd get payback for ever spending that much money on a pair of shoes.
But, never say never. Next week I may tempt fate.
I know a lot of people who spent that or more on their wedding dress, which technically fits the question. A lot of them were not making very much so it went on a credit card so they ended up spending even more after interest. My dress was over $400 but under $500, which was hard for me to get my head around because I'm a thrift store shopper who goes on dollar days, but I figured out it was just under 2 weeks of my take-home income and for the absolute perfect wedding dress I could handle that.
250K at least and even then I would struggle. $1000 dollars would go a long way at a food bank and I know that's all I would think about every time I would wear the item.

I make enough money where I could spend $1000 on myself, but I never would on clothing, shoes or purses. The most I've ever spent on a purse was $40. I think it's a waste of money.
I am, however, spending a couple of grand on a trip to Prague, Vienna and Budapest in 2 weeks...travel is what I will throw my money away on.

I'm ashamed to say I went through a period where I spent that much on a purse bec I got obsessed with Balenciaga bags. I'm over that now. Seeing Kim K. wearing them all the time was enough to put me off. ;)

I would hate to spend 1000 dollars on one article of clothing. I would feel so guilty and probably never wear it for fear of getting it ruined.
I spend that much on shoes/clothes, but I believe in quality over quantity.
My shoes have lasted for over 10 years and will never go out of style.

I have a small wardrobe and wear my clothes for 10-15 years at a time - I don't change sizes much - and if you divide the cost of the garment by the number of uses, it's not as outrageous as it sounds. A $1000 dress worn 100 times (say, 10 times a year, or 20 times a year for something I can wear to the office) is $10 a wear. That's on par with something from H&M that only gets worn 4-5 times before it starts to unravel.
Would rather invest in a really gorgeous piece of clothing made by well-paid workers than 'fast fashion' made to be disposable and made in a sweatshop.
If I were to ever get married (haha), I MIGHT be willing to spend that much on the dress and shoes together. But probably not.
I make an OK living, but I would feel horribly guilty if I spent that kind of money on a single item of clothing. On Pinterest I have all of these clothing items pinned that I would love to have, and the overwhelming majority of them are under $150. I am just not into spending money on something I wear. I could MAYBE see spending a few hundred (not more than $400) on a bag, but only if it were something classic, like a well-made Kelly bag, that would never, ever go out of style.
A couple of days ago Gawker had an article about a t-shirt Urban Outfitters is selling that has a design reminiscent of the Star of David on the left breast. It looks like something the Nazis made Jews wear. I was almost as offended that the t-shirt cost $100 as I was by the design.
I would be much more likely to spend the money on things for the house or travel. Or books -- but even then, I always check if I can get a book cheaper on Half.com before I buy it on Amazon. Guess I'm just a cheapskate.

I"d have to have at least 1 million - and I wouldn't spend it on clothes or shoes - eventually they fall apart, become unwearable, etc. But jewelry now - I've spent more than that on jewelry already.
I'll go with 200,000 a year.
The most I ever spent on an article of clothing was a lamb leather jacket (sorry, PETA) for $200 which I haven't worn in almost 12 years because it's a very 90's jacket and would look ridiculous on anybody now. Maybe if the 90's fashion scene comes back in style it might be of use to someone. I'm pretty sure Gaga would wear it in a second.
It would probably have to be a million. I'm still not sure I'd spend that much on an article of clothing or a pair of shoes. I buy classic style clothes and keep them forever. If it's well made and fits, and costs five bucks, that's fine by me.

I almost always only ever buy stuff on sale and never pay full price and I'd think even if I was rich I probably still would,it's just the way I am.
My roommate once spent $900 on a skirt because she thought it made her look amazing. The catch? She was a freelancer at the time. If she was making $30K I'd be surprised. She thought she'd wear it so often that it would be a good investment. But she's gained too much weight and can't wear it anymore.

Maybe if I was making around 100K a year and found something that I REALLY, REALLY loved. But like most of you, I can't really see myself spending that kind of money on one thing...

No amount would make me o.k. with spending that type of money on shoes or clothes.
Never! I get an incredible amount of joy from finding bargins. Plus, I think even really expensive clothes are very well made now. It isn't the cost of clothes that make them look good. It is how they fit and if they are a style that is suited to your body type. A $12 dress from the clearance rack at Wal-Mart or Target can look amazing if it fits you well while a $1000 dress from Prada can look like crap if it isn't a flattering cut or you buy the wrong size.
So out of my realm of thinking... Do they make $1,000 motorcycle boots?!

I've done it for a purse. Louis Vuitton (because I can't afford Chanel). I make a good living and the overtime I made off a project paid for it. A friend came back from Hong Kong with a knock-off and you can tell the difference. My purse is almost four years old and it's in perfect shape.
For shoes and purses, I spend. For shoes, you get what you pay for. For purses, well I just like pretty things.
The only reason I don't own any Louboutins is because they don't fit me properly. I guess that's a good thing.

I also think it doesn't matter what you earn. If you haven't stolen the money or missed your bills then you should buy whatever makes you happy no matter what anyone thinks.
I don't spend that much too often, I prefer sales and love vintage finds and op shops, but a statement bag or pair of shoes is worth every cent of the way you feel when you're wearing it.
I just bought a bag that cost around $1500 and I make a little over $48,000 a year.
I live with my parents so I can buy my Louboutins and handbags without too much regret.

My first husband bought me a coat for $800. I gave it to the Salvation Army after the divorce. I think I would rather spend the money on my garden. But, if I had a million dollars, maybe if I could find a Chanel bag on ebay for $1,000. I'd buy it.
I'm with a lot of people before me...no matter how much money I made, I don't think I could ever bring myself to spend that much on one item of clothing. My max is $100-200, and that is for something like a formal dress. Most of my clothes items cost under $20. I am a cheapskate and love being creative with inexpensive stuff.

I kill shoes. I went through three 3 pairs of Homeypeds in one year, and they aren't cheap. So, yes I would spend it on shoes. Jewellery I have already spent it on.

Oh god I just remembered I spent 2500 on a Chanel bag. I've worn it three times maybe. Despite my moniker I've never bought a Prada. I meant to name myself dontrainonmyparade and I started to correct my misspelling of parade and noticed that it would be more inventive to do Prada. ;)

I could never spend $1,000 on a piece of clothing or a pair of shoes. I'd rather put that $1,000 in the bank. Like someone else said, I have fears/issues when it comes to spending money.
I used to make over 120K and paid 1K for shoes a few times. Now, I think it's shameful. I have since moved to a rural town and I'm so happy to see that my priorities have changed. I no longer care to spend anywhere CLOSE to that. It's a wonder what daily interactions with real, down to earth, hard working people will teach you without even having a conversation with them.
I've spent 1k+ on multiple suits, 150-600 on shirts, 350-500 on shoes and only earn 80k a year.
